What to Expect During Your Whitney Sleep Physician Consultation

Good sleep is one of the most important components of a healthy life. Getting enough high-quality sleep can transform one’s lifestyle and pave the way for better energy levels and a lower risk of health conditions.

Achieving the best sleep possible sometimes involves a customized treatment plan. The first step towards discovering the plan that’s right for you is a sleep consultation. During this process, you will spend a night at a Whitney Sleep location, and our physicians will monitor various biomarkers to determine the length and quality of your sleep. Here’s what you can expect from your consultation.

Step 1: Measurements & Prep

Your sleep consultation is designed to provide you with a comfortable and stress-free night of sleep. Once you arrive, a technologist from Whitney Sleep will prepare you for the study by attaching probes that measure oxygen levels, breathing, heart rhythm, eye movement, brain activity, extremity movement, and other indicators. These will be applied with the utmost care. You will also be fitted with a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) mask.

Your technologist will walk you through the purposes of the study as well as what you can expect – which will mostly involve just resting!

Step 2: Evaluation

Next, you will slip into a comfortable night’s rest. During the study, our technologists will evaluate the various measurements and monitor your breathing. If you have sleep apnea, you will be properly fitted with a CPAP mask that maximizes your breathing comfort and ensures you are receiving enough oxygen.

Upon waking in the morning, the staff at Whitney Sleep will have a comprehensive data set of all your sleep-related metrics.

Step 3: Treatment

Finally, a certified sleep medicine specialist will review your sleep study results. If you experience excessive movement, problems maintaining deep sleep, breathing issues, or general discomfort, our team will be happy to develop a treatment plan that is right for you. If a PAP machine is prescribed, one of our PAP specialists will assist you in finding the best equipment for your needs.

Our practice offers a wide variety of sleep supplies to help create an ideal night of sleep for you. We will review the options available with you and decide on a treatment that meets your needs.

Most health insurance policies cover sleep studies and treatment machines, and Whitney Sleep works closely with many of the largest insurance providers in Minnesota. We will make sure you get the treatment you need so you can get the quality sleep you deserve.
