Bi-Level or BiPAP is similar to CPAP in that it uses positive pressure to push the air way open so it doesn’t collapse.  Bi-Level adds a second pressure to help alleviate the work of breathing and give the patient a deeper breathe.  Bi-Level is used instead of CPAP for many reasons.  One reason would be if more pressure is needed than what CPAP can deliver.  Also, for those who do not tolerate CPAP, Bi-Level can sometimes feel more comfortable.  Some patients need more breathing support and Bi-Level can help give that person a bigger, deeper breath too.
